Opening of Halinga Biomethane Plant

Construction of the Halinga biomethane plant, owned by Halinga OÜ and part of the Infortar group, has been completed and an occupancy permit has been issued for what is one of the largest biomethane plants in Estonia. The facility will commence production once it receives its integrated environmental permit.

The plant’s technical solution was designed and delivered by German renewable gas producer EnviTec Anlagenbau GmbH & Co. KG. The project was financed through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery fund.

“Estonia is a dairy country and, increasingly, a gas-producing country as well. If we were to restore dairy cattle numbers to the levels seen in the early 1990s, we could cover Estonia’s entire gas demand. Expanding renewable gas production would strengthen our energy and food security while helping to address environmental challenges in both rural and urban areas,” said Ain Hanschmidt, CEO of Infortar.

The Halinga biomethane plant marks an important step in increasing domestic renewable energy production and advancing circular economy principles. Renewable gas production helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels, strengthens energy security, and creates additional value from agricultural by-products.
